What is Hydroelectric energy?

Hydraulic energy, as part of renewable energies, means the capacity of water into energy through the movement and integrity of water.

Hydroelectric facilities have a long useful life.

   Sustainable:
Hydropower helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

   Flexibility:
Hydraulic resources facilitate the management of energy demand peaks by being able to use the dammed water in a flexible way.

   Control:
Reservoirs are especially useful when regulating the flow of a river to avoid, for example, dangerous floods.

   Costs:
Although the investment required for the start-up of a hydroelectric plant is high - its development involves the construction of swamps, dams, canals, etc. - the operating costs are low.

   Back:
Its operational flexibility is presented as an essential complement and support for the development of other renewable intermittent generation technologies such as solar photovoltaic and wind power.

Advantages of hydroelectric energy.

Although it is common to hear the terms reservoir, dam and central interchangeably, the truth is that each of them refers to a different reality that could easily be identified as follows:

Dam: it is the civil works infrastructure. Its physical characteristics include the height above the foundations, the crowning length and the concrete volume.
Reservoir: it is the water store. To know its real situation, two variables must be analyzed mainly: the water level and the stored volume.
Central: it is the construction where the generation groups are located. The two basic quantities to define a hydroelectric plant are the head and the flow.
